The process for registering a new trailer in South Australia

At Basic Trailers, we make the business of buying a new trailer and registering as simple as possible, and in most cases any trailer you buy from us will be available to hitch up to your vehicle and tow away on the same day you purchase it.

This is because as an established and reputable manufacturer, Basic Trailers has our own Make Code in the DPTI's Transport Regulation User Management Processing System (TRUMPS), the South Australia government registration and licensing database.

This means that we have our own unique identifier, and so when we register a new trailer for you, the TRUMPS system automatically has a record of the vehicle identification number, date of manufacture and registration, the number plate, proof of identity and all the other evidence that is applicable to complete the registration documents. 

We submit the VIN plate and other registration details on your behalf (including the gross trailer mass, aggregate trailer mass and tare weight) so that your new trailer is registered from the moment this process is completed and can be towed on the road legally from that time forward.

You are therefore able to save time and avoid the inconvenience of your trailer having to undergo a pre-registration identity inspection by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) or SAPOL.

How long can you register your trailer for?

In South Australia, owners can register a trailer for the first time for a period of either three months or twelve months. As of June 2026, the cost is $35 for three months or $105 for twelve months. There is also a $10 administration fee as well as the option to pay monthly by direct debit ($10 per month).

Re-registering a trailer in South Australia 

When the time comes to re-register your trailer, you will be sent a reminder and a new Registration Details Certificate from the DPTI. You need to remember that in SA you are not issued with a registration label that can be affixed to your trailer as a visual reminder that you can refer to, so you need to keep an eye out for the paperwork that will come in the post.

With a previously registered trailer (or caravan), you have the option to renew your trailer registration for a period of 3 or 12 months. There are a number of payment methods available for re-registering a trailer, including direct debit, over the phone, sending the completed form by mail, at a post office, or in-person at a Service SA customer service centre. Perhaps the easiest method is via the EzyReg app, which is available to download for free for smartphones and tablets.

Do you need a special licence to tow a trailer in South Australia?

There is no requirement to have a special licence to tow a trailer in South Australia. This includes light trailers, caravans, camper trailers, car trailers, boat trailers or horse floats, provided the Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) is no more than 4.5 tonnes. This applies to learner drivers and probationary drivers as well.

What is the speed limit when towing a trailer in South Australia?

The speed limit when towing a trailer on SA roads is the same as for all other traffic i.e., there are no separate speed limits when you are towing a trailer.

However, take note of the specific regulations before traveling interstate, as each state and territory has its own laws with regard to towing speed limits, so ensure you pay attention to roadside signs.

What documents are required to register your trailer in SA?

To register a trailer (or caravan) the following information is needed: you will need to provide proof of purchase, ideally an invoice showing the vehicle identification number (VIN)etc.and vehicle plate number, proof of identity (e.g., SA driver’s licence), company name (if applicable) and a completed Application for Registration and Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance form.

How long does trailer registration take?

For new trailers purchased from an accredited manufacturer like Basic Trailers, the registration process can usually be completed on the spot. Our trailers already have a number plate and VIN plate affixed, and so can be towed away from our Adelaide workshop on the day of you finalise payment.

How much is trailer registration, and how do I renew?

In South Australia, registering a light trailer (ATM under 4,500kg) costs $35 for 3 months or $105 for 12 months. Before your registration expires, you will be sent a Registration Details Certificate in the post. There are a range of ways to pay, and there is also a monthly direct debit option ($10 per month).

Is the process the same for registering a used or homemade trailer?

If you buy a used or homemade trailer, it will still need to have a VIN and compliance plate, and be entered on the national Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV). In some cases, an identity inspection conducted by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) or SAPOL may be required.
